Get to know Supt. Daniel Newman SR

Pastor Daniel Newman Sr. was born the last of twelve children to Reverend Nathan and Mary Alice Newman on June 11, 1963 at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana.  Two months shortly after his birth, his mother passed away leaving him to be raised by his eldest sister, Reverend Hilda Jean Mosley.  In 1972, the family moved from New Orleans, Louisiana to Oakland, California where they attended several churches before becoming members of Allen Temple Baptist Church in Oakland.  In February of 1984 while attending Sonoma State University, he was invited by his classmate and future wife Latrease Vaughn to attend a church service at her home church, Emmanuel Church of God in Christ in Richmond, California.  After hearing just one sermon, Pastor Newman rushed to get saved and became a member of Emmanuel COGIC under the leadership of Pastor David Vaughn Sr.  Passionate about his new-found salvation and being just a babe in Christ, Pastor Newman attended several revivals at Emmanuel where he received the Holy Ghost in April 1984.  In August 1984, he began experiencing a series of dreams that he did not understand.  Being perplexed as to the meaning of these dreams, he told his Pastor, who interpreted the dreams as God calling him to preach.  That same day, Pastor Vaughn informed him that he would be the main speaker in their Sunday night service, prompting him to preach his very first message with little time to prepare. That night, Pastor Newman preached his first message entitled "God's Love" from I John 4:19.  After his sermon, Pastor Vaughn confirmed his dreams and his calling to ministry.

Pastor Newman continued on to serve as a minister under the spiritual guidance of Pastor David Vaughn Sr. at Emmanuel COGIC from 1984-86 and was later ordained as an Elder in 1986.  Pastor Newman remained at Emmanuel until the passing of Pastor Vaughn in October 1992.  During his time at Emmanuel, Pastor Newman learned the functions and operations of Districts, Jurisdictions, and valuable lessons that would be evident in his preaching style later on.  There was one instance in which Pastor Newman, alongside his Pastor, attended the Richmond District meeting under the late Superintendent and future Bishop of California Northwest, Clarence Davis.  In district meetings, ministers and elders were given five minutes to bring forth a message and in the mist of his five-minute message, Pastor Newman recall feeling the tug of his suit coat before being asked to take his seat.  Confused as to why he did not receive his full five minutes, Pastor Newman confided in his Pastor who explained to him that he was preaching before his time.  It was that night that Pastor Newman learned the true meaning of "Old Time Preaching" and the valuable lesson that you cannot preach a message if you have not experienced it.  Although Pastor Newman continued to have several opportunities to preach in District meetings and his local church, it was the learning and mentoring of his Pastor that enabled him to hold to that "Old Time Preaching" that is so needed today.  In 1992, after the passing of his Pastor, David Vaughn Sr., Pastor Newman remained at Emmanuel where his brother-in-law Pastor Buford Owens was installed as the new Pastor.  Pastor Newman served as Assistant Pastor for two years until being awaken with a vision from God of building a ministry of his own.

In January 1995, Pastor Newman was led by the spirit of God to begin his own ministry.  In his first vision, God gave him the name of the Church, Joshua House of Prayer, yet he realized he did not have a building to start this ministry.  Two weeks after his first vision, Pastor Newman woke his wife and told her of his new vision of God showing him the location of his church.  On February 5, 1995 that vision became a reality and Joshua House of Prayer Church of God in Christ was established at 1963 Rumrill Boulevard in the city of San Pablo, California.  The church became a part of California Western Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction under the leadership of Bishop Jesse Dickens while serving in the Mount Zion District under the late Superintendent Archie Brice.  After serving two years in the Mount Zion District, Pastor Newman and congregation left Mount Zion and became a part of the newly established True Vine District under the newly appointed Superintendent Roger Vaughn.

In 1999, Pastor Newman was appointed as the Jurisdictional Secretary of California Western where he continues to serve diligently, in addition to his various roles as the Jurisdictional Event Coordinator, Trustee board member, Third Saturday Meeting President, and Administrator Assistant to Bishop Leo Smith. In 2005, God placed it in his spirit to move Joshua House of Prayer to the city of Vallejo where it currently resides today. He served as Assistant Superintendent of True Vine District under the late Superintendent Roger Vaughn from 2007 until his passing and was installed as the new Superintendent March in 2014.  Pastor Newman also serves as the Vice President of the Vallejo Bay Area Christmas Revival, a 52 year tradition that comprises of Pastors from Jurisdictions and cities all over the Bay Area. Pastor Newman is married to his college sweetheart First Lady Latrease Newman who he married in June 1986 and God blessed them with three beautiful children:  Daniel S. Newman Jr., DeAndre T. Newman, and Ashley L. Newman.
