Sister ashley newman
Youth leader
Ashley Newman, affectionately known as Ms. Ashley to the youth, was born and raised in Richmond, California to Pastor Daniel and First Lady Latrease Newman. As the Pastor and First Lady’s youngest and only daughter, Ms. Ashley grew up in what she refers to as the “iron triangle”- a life revolved around education, home, and God. It was in church where Ms. Ashley learned to read at an early age, participated in sunshine band, youth choir, assisted as testimony service conductor, volunteered with feeding programs, and served as a junior usher. While her home life consisted of watching tv, her education and extracurricular activities enabled her to develop an ambitious work ethic and expand her creativity in different areas such as, band, elementary, junior high, and high school chorus, ballet, African dance, musical production, volleyball, softball and a starring role on a public access channel discussing the human brain. Ms. Ashley excelled in education enabling her to obtain a full ride scholarship to Pacific Academy Normura School and Bentley Upper School, some of the top private schools in the Bay Area. She attended and graduated with multiple honors, including Cum Laude from Spelman College, an Historically Black College specifically for African American women in Atlanta, Georgia.
Ms. Ashley is no stranger to working with the youth. Since the age of 15, Ms. Ashley has worked with children ranging from ages 5-17. She worked as a summer camp counselor at the Richmond recreational center, provided free tutoring services during the school year, volunteered in the Morehouse-Spelman Learning Club for juvenile delinquents in Fulton County, interned as a lead coordinator at Helping Hands, an after school program for children with incarcerated parents in Georgia, and worked as a teacher for the Drew Charter School in Atlanta, Georgia. Although she had a passion for the young people, she understood that her purpose and zeal would best serve in her home church in California. Shortly after moving back to California, Ms. Ashley gave her life to Christ and answered the call to youth ministry after noticing a disparity of young people in church. She created Youth Bible Academy (YBA), a Wednesday Bible study class specifically for youth. Kids were served dinner and learned the Bible in a way that was customized to their level of understanding, and consisted of activities and projects to help retain Biblical knowledge. To keep the youth involved in church, she created a youth choir, youth drill team, seasonal plays, fundraisers to fly the youth to the Church of God In Christ’s annual AIM convention, and wrote a rap song for the youth to remember Biblical patriarchs. Her work with the youth in her local church allowed her to serve as the True Vine District Youth leader and the Jurisdictional Chairlady of the YPWW department for California Western Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction, which she currently holds today. Ms. Ashley’s passion for the young people stems from her dedication to ensure that all youth come unto repentance and the knowledge of God so that they never feel alone in this ever-changing world.
